Again?

            I need your help.

I’ve reflected on college and wishing that I could do it all over again with a major that I enjoy, leading to a career I’d enjoy. I’m debating not letting that chance get away. I’ve done the course math and I could take four classes this summer, six in the fall, six in the spring, and then five the following fall and graduate with another major (on top of my English one) in December of 2009.

I’m really debating it. I’m going to be praying about it. I would love for you to be praying about it as well. Also leave your opinions. Is about $20,000 of debt and an extra year of school worth it? Let me know. Comment.

    About debt:

I think you might be more hindered from doing what you would like to do in the long run if you had debt. You see, if you have 20K in debt, your job is more defined by paying off debt (if you are wise and pay it off as soon as possible to avoid paying all the interest) than it is by what you want to pursue with you life. Graduating from college puts you at much more of an advantage than you realize.

Think about it: if you have 20K in debt, you have to get a job that is going to allow you to pay it off in a reasonable time, meaning that you might have to settle for jobs you don’t like until you debt is paid off, and your experience would be in fields that have little to do with your passions (please know this is speculation, you could end up with a meaningful job you love, you are just severely compromised by debt).

If you have no debt, however, you can graduate and start working immediately, even at a base job like waiting tables. With the money you are earning and get to keep, you could take night classes you really want to take at a community college (discounted price) and still be able to save money. Or, you could again work any sort of job and in your free time offer your services for free to companies/organizations who do work you are passionate about. Either way, you are furthering yourself and your education as directly related to your passions without going into debt. Sure, it’s not as easy as taking and spending someone else’s money for another degree, but could be invaluable in the long run if you avoid the burden of debt.

    Sorry for the diatribe,

    Eric

    Grammatical corrections:

End of first paragraph: Graduating from college WITHOUT DEBT puts you at much more of an advantage than you realize.

i definitely see what you are saying about college being great. here is my advice – (take it for what it is… (pretty much nothing)) graduate. get a job. serve God wherever he puts you.

    i used double parentheses

First reaction: I say go for it. you only live once…why do it at a job that you hate?

    More thought out reaction:
    Same as the first.
But add prayer to the mixture.
